Реалістичну традицію міжнародних відносин неодноразово критикували за ахісторичність: її концепції та передумови розглядалися так, ніби вони завжди були присутніми, або можуть бути використаними поза конкретними історичними умовами. Тому виникає питання доцільності та ефективності використання історії у теорії реалізму.
